Hotel with a view
I spent 2 days around new year in Menton with old friends. As it was low season and pandemic times, the city was calm. We stayed at two different hotels at Promenade du Soleil. They both had a magnificent view over the sea. The weather was very grey and cold, but no rain.
Riva hotel served a nice breakfast in the room with.
We had lunch at Le Grand Large, very close to the hotels. We all chose Mussels with rose wine (yes, even in cold winterdays we drink rose wine) We were the only guests in the restaurant.
New years party
We spend New Year’s Eve at a private dinner in one of the old Palaces, Winter Palace, that has been transformed into apartments. The hotel opened on the 1st of january 1903 and it was a haven for mainly English and Russian members of the European aristocracy who preferred to spend the winter on the Mediterranean before the first World War.
Because of the pandemic, there were no official fireworks, but we could admire some private ones.
City walk
The next day we walked around in the city. We followed the Promenade du Soleil until the Bastion, which today is a museum presenting Jean Cocteau’s work. Then we came to the Vieux Port (old harbor) and Plage les Sablettes. We continued further east toward the Italian border and passed by the private beaches.
We went back and had lunch at Esplanade des Sablettes at a restaurant called Pecora Negra where we had delicious pizzas.
We went into the Old village and took the ramps up to the St. MIchel church and admired the fantastic view. The St. Michel church is built in a baroque style and the bell tower is from XVIIIe century.
Just behind is the Chapel of the white Penitents with its decorated facade. It was built between 1680 and1687.
We walked around and admired the small, narrow alleys. We even found our friend Carmen’s workshop (clindahl.com), which was closed today.
Then we took the pedestrian street back to the hotel.
