Looking for red wine
in Côtes de Provence

Even if Côtes de Provence is mainly known for its rose wine, we were looking for some nice red bottles. This tour was done in April 2023.

Château Paquette - appellation Fréjus

In about 1 hour by car from Nice, we reached the first stop at Château Paquette, a nice Family estate for +70 years.
They do a Côtes de Provence Fréjus, a special appellation from the Esterel massif. They have the Certification “Biological agriculture”.
Very nice lady served us outside in the sun.

I bought the Roches Noire 2021 that should be stored some years to mature for 14.80 euros

Château de Cabran - red wine with character

Then we continued to Château de Cabran only 15 minutes away. This is a long time family owned estate of 20 ha.
Produces wines of character through long-established verification processes.

Cuvee de la Vignes haute (Cincault, Shiraz, Carignan ) – A little fruity, can be stored up to 5 years but will not change much. 17 euros.

Cuvee de la Muraille (Shiraz, Grenache) – More powerful taste. Can be stored up to 10 years but the 2021 was absolutely good to drink now. 13.50 euros.

After that it was time for lunch and we stopped at Restaurant de la Maurette where we had a nice 3 course menu including wine and coffee for 22 euros. However the wine was not so good.

Domaine du Jas d’Esclans - a well-known domaine

Next stop was Domaine du Jas d’Esclans only 3 minutes away. This is a bigger, well-known and more touristy domain.
The wine is fine, but more expensive
I bought Jas d’Esclan Coup de foudre (Cru Classe) 2017 for 15.50 euros.

They offered us a sun hat!

Domaine de Canta Rainette - a good address

Before heading home again we made a spontaneous stop at Domaine de Canta Rainette, a family property since 1958, but the family created their own brand, Domaine de la Rainette in 2000.
I bought Origines Rosé, a nice aperitif wine for 7 euros.
And Grande Reserve (Syrah, Mourvedre), a very nice everyday red wine for 9.90 euros. It has an expressive and powerful taste after 12 months in an oak barrel. Suitable for Mediterranean food.

This was a good address that I will buy again!
